Welcome to Beginning Guitar Class! In this course, you will learn about the guitar as an instrument, how to read music notation and guitar tablature, and build performance skills both as an individual player and as part of an ensemble. Assessments will be in the form of tests, quizzes, and in-class performances.
Guitars will be provided for each student and should be treated with the utmost care. You should bring your own pick and keep notes during class.
Grading will be based upon the following:
Classwork / Practice: 50%
Performance Assessments: 50%
- Student performs assigned repertoire alone and within an ensemble to demonstrate proficiency on the instrument.
- Students will be given several written assessments on material covered in class.
Rules and Expectations:
Come prepared to learn and participate on your instrument.
RESPECT your instrument and your peers.
No phones/devices unless otherwise stated.
Philosophy:
This is an introductory course designed to help you learn many of the different styles and techniques of guitar playing. Each unit includes many playing activities and written exercises which are essential to the playing section. The written portions are not busy work. Please make a strong effort to UNDERSTAND all parts of all units, written and played, as they build upon each other. What you learn in each unit will be useful later in the course.
Your progress in guitar playing is almost totally dependent upon YOU. Although most people think that music educators are hired to teach students to sing or to play instruments, what we really do is teach students how to train themselves. The real music educator is YOU. YOU absorb the instruction, YOU systematically apply it to practice patterns, YOU discipline your fingers. No one else can accomplish progress for you. The finest players have been those who really worked at it, those who were committed to playing well. With a positive attitude and a firm end goal in mind, you can create a self-discipline for practice that can reward you with fine playing skills.
